In Prathom 5 the children
continue to follow the UK National
Literacy Strategy. In Language
Arts the children cover a wide
range of genres and explore poems,
novels and stories by significant
children’s writers. Play-scripts
are written and acted out for
classmates. The children learn to
write persuasively often using a
cross-circular theme. Recounts,
news reports and instructional
texts are the focus of non-fiction
work
Mathematics follows the UK
National Numeracy Strategy for
Year 6. Wherever possible, these
topics are related to solving
real-life, practical problems.
In Science the children
look at Life Cycles, Changing
States, Habitats and Friction.
They learn the importance of
testing ideas using evidence from
systematic observation and
measurement. The children use an
increasingly wide range of
reference sources and communicate
findings using ICT in an
appropriate way.
Theme
Studies covers a range of
historical and geographical topics
both local and international. The
areas of historical study cover
the Indus Valley civilisation and
life in Victorian Britain. The
children look at archaeological
evidence to make insights and draw
conclusions about how everyday
people lived in the past.
Geographical topics examine man’s
affect on the environment and how
this is presented in the media.
The children are encouraged to
start forming their own opinions
and express them orally and in
written form.
Physical
Education and Art are
both taught by specialist
teachers.
