Dear Primary 5 Parents
It is with pleasure we report
again on study, work programmes
and events at the Primary 5
(Year 6) level.
Our last report was just prior
to the parent teacher meetings
which were extremely successful.
It is always beneficial for both
parents and teachers to share
and report information which is
helpful for the overall benefit
of your child and your child's
development and learning.
Secondly, the presentation of
"The Magic Finger" productions
at the end of semester were also
very well attended, and we thank
all of you for your support. The
students we know enjoyed the
opportunity to show their use
and acting of English in this
form of presentation.
The following curriculum
headings outline detail of the
class programme which your
children have, and will be
involved with in Year 6 in the
coming weeks.
MATHEMATICS
In Mathematics, Primary 5 have
been looking at and covering a
range of different areas.
Initially, after the holidays we
began looking at how to use
approximations and inverse
operations. We looked at
estimating the results of a
problem before working them out
There was some time spent on
fractions, decimals and
percentages to get the first
week started.
In the second week we began
learning to read and plot
co-ordinates on a grid. This was
well balanced out with a look
into working with both integers
and decimals.
During the third week we will be
looking at angles and the use of
a protractor to calculate them.
There will be a chance to have a
look at certain things
that have been reflected and
certain things
LANGUAGE ARTS
This semester we commence our
Language Arts studies by looking
at Myths, Fables and Legends.
This study looks at the features
of this genre, the reading of
many examples and also
identifying morals which are
part of fables themselves.
Students have also looked at the
feelings of fable characters and
have retold fables they have
read.
Our next study will be looking
and using the Persuasive Writing
genre. This will include writing
arguments convincing the reader
or listener that their powers of
persuasion are convincing, but
overall to look at the features
of a persuasive argument and to
use these features and develop
persuasive language in a
convincing and effective way.
THEME AND SCIENCE
In Themes class we
have finished a unit on
Coasts and are now in the
middle of a unit on
The Ancient Indus Valley
Civilization. The focus in
the coastal unit was on how
and why the coast line is
always changing. We
looked at a variety of
coastal features and learnt
how, over time, erosion and
deposition has made them
what they are today and how
in the future they will
be something different
again. We spent an exciting
class in the science
lab where we fabricated
a coast line complete
with trees, sand, rocks
and water. We then
simulated waves, erosion and
deposition and watched the
changes.
Our Ancient Indus Valley
Civilization unit has so far
included a lot of inquiry
based learning and one
lesson recreating ancient
artifacts from clay. A
few pictures are below.
